SAYRE, PA (WENY) -- Dozens of families across the Twin Tiers are scrambling to find new child care options after being told the Foundations Early Learning Center in Sayre is closing on Friday, Nov. 15th. Despite the closure, there is still hope that the building could continue to house a daycare facility, because while Guthrie doesn't own Foundations, it does own the building.

"As landlord, we are seeking a non-profit organization to own and manage childcare operations in the building and remain optimistic about finding a solution that will ensure safe and enriching child care in the Sayre area for years to come," a Guthrie spokesperson said in a prepared statement.

While there is optimism a new owner can be found, employees at Foundations say that parents are angry, confused, and keeping their fingers crossed that a solution can be found. However, even if a new owner is found, New York State regulators still need to sign off, meaning the facility could remain empty for months.

With a capacity of about 164, there are now about half that number enrolled in programs at Foundations. The building itself is relatively new, having been completed only back in 2021.

According to the director of Foundations, the current owner did not give a reason for the closure. Foundations provides child care for infants up to school age children through pre school and after school programs.
