Investigation expands across the region for two Elmira men charged with burglaries in Steuben County
(WENY) -- On October 16, two Elmira men, Trent Johnson and Zachary Smith, were arrested following an investigation of multiple burglaries in Steuben County on October 12. Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard shares how the investigation now expands beyond Steuben County.
Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard says the two men allegedly stole a variety of items including motorcycles, a trailer, diagnostic equipment for vehicle repairs, and more. Mainly things that could potentially resell, Allard says.
At this time, Allard says officials believe the burglaries were crimes of opportunity and not targeted residences.
The investigation began with the Steuben and Chemung County Sheriff's Offices, the Canisteo and Elmira Police Departments, and has now expanded to include the Corning and Waverly Police Departments as well.
"So it continues to expand," said Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard. "Last information I had, there was more property from more locations discovered in that same area from different jurisdictions. So it will continue to expand out until all of the property and all of the sites that occurred with these crimes are united."
On those initial charges, Smith and Johnson have been arraigned and released in Steuben County. However, it's a different story in Chemung County. Elmira Police charged the two men after stolen items related to other burglaries in Chemung County and surrounding areas were also found.
On October 15 in Chemung County, Smith was charged with Criminal Possession of a weapon 4th Degree, a class A Misdemeanor, and Johnson, was charged with Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 3rd Degree, a class D Felony. Both men were initially booked into the Chemung County jail, but later released.
In Steuben County, the pair are charged with second and third-degree Burglary, third-degree Grand Larceny, and fourth-degree Larceny.
At this time, the Elmira Police and other agencies are still investigating the two, and additional charges against them are expected.
Sheriff Allard says anyone with information about the burglary spree is asked to contact the Steuben County Sheriff's Office. The Elmira Police are also asking people to call the Elmira Police Department at 607-737-5626 or the anonymous tip line at 607-271-HALT.
