Leaf collection to begin in Elmira and Corning in the coming weeks

(WENY) -- Leaf collection is set to begin in both Elmira and Corning in the next few weeks. The City of Corning will collect loose leaves starting on Monday, October 28, and the City of Elmira will start approximately the second week of November.
City of Corning:
Residents who would like their loose leaves collected are asked to rake them in the area between the curb and the sidewalk. Officials say leaves need to be properly placed in this area to prevent them from plugging drainage systems because leaves can be slippery when wet.
People are also asked to keep leaves out of the roadway as vehicles will likely park on top of them. The heat from the engine could potentially ignite the leaves. Drivers should also be on the lookout for any kids that may be playing in leaf piles.
Crews picking up leaves have been instructed to not pick up piles with brush and/or trash mixed in.
For those that want to make sure their leaves are collected before pickup ends, they must have their leaves raked to the curbside by Monday, November 28 at 6:00 A.M.
Any leaves not left on the curb before that time must be bagged in clear plastic bags. Mulching leaves in a lawn mower or other mulching device beforehand can reduce leaf volumes so more can be put in the bag. The City of Corning will begin to pick up the bags on November 25 and collection will end on December 20.
City of Elmira:
Since leaf pickup doesn't begin in Elmira until the second week of November, residents are encouraged to bring their loose leaves to the City of Elmira Compost Facility in the meantime which is located at 840 Linden Place Ext. / 2 Industrial Park Blvd.
Drop off is from Tuesday to Friday from 7:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. and Saturday from 8:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M.
More information regarding leaf pickup in Elmira will be released about a week before pickup begins.
