DEC reminds homeowners of fuel oil tank safety and inspection

(WENY) -- It's never too early to get ahead of preparations for the winter season, including making sure your home's heat source is working properly and in good condition.
“Planning ahead for the winter season will help save New Yorkers time, money, and potential headaches later on when it comes to home heating,” DEC Interim Commissioner Sean Mahar said, “Annual inspections and other simple precautions can prevent leaks and spills and ensure people, property, and the environment are protected."
The DEC is reminding homeowners to put inspecting oil fuel tanks on the top of their lists when it comes to preparing for winter. Homeowners looking to receive a shipment of fuel oil before winter should properly inspect their fuel oil tanks to ensure that there are no leaks that could cause spills.
When inspecting above-ground storage tanks, you may come across signs of rusting or wet spots, unprotected fuel lines, dying or lost vegetation around the tank, or broken gauges. Underground storage tanks should be free of any water or potential obstructions.
DEC asks that you notify your fuel provider if you detect any defects with your storage tank.
