New York State greenlights Elmira's Brand Park Pool demolition
ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- State officials have given Elmira the greenlight to tear down Brand Park Pool.
The city was originally told that Brand Park Pool could be taken down in March of 2024, but plans were soon halted. According to city officials, New York State required an engineering study to determine if the pool could be salvaged before it could be torn down.
Elmira City Manager Mike Collins says the city was notified of the state's decision last week.
"We'll put a bid out for contractors to get a cost on how much it would be for demolition and then, based on the cost, we do go with the lowest bidder. We'll proceed [with demolition] as soon as possible," said Collins.
There is no date yet for demolition.
Brand Park Pool was initially expected to be torn down by the end of 2023. Since then, there have been several grassroots efforts by some community members to save Brand Park Pool. However, the city said the pool is in such disrepair, it would be too costly to get it back up and running.
