Claverack Rural Electric Cooperative sends linemen crew to help Helene victims
WYSOX, P.A. (WENY) -- Support for the victims of Hurricane Helene has been pouring in from across the nation including from a local electric cooperative that began providing mutual aid recently to affected areas.
Claverack REC may be based in Bradford County, but they've joined the national effort of linemen and electrical workers in the mission to restoring power to those impacted by Hurricane Helene. The Pennsylvania based cooperative joins several hundred linemen on assignment in the south.
It's a familiar but welcome sight for those plighted by natural disasters. Electrical workers from over a dozen states have traveled to parts of the South devastated by Hurricane Helene's impacts, including Claverack Rural Electric Cooperative out of Bradford County.
"So they arrived on Monday morning and immediately went to work. I know that when when initially started, there were already some supporting crews down there helping Blue Ridge Energy out," said Claverack REC's CEO, Steve Allabaugh, "The first thing they said is that the, that the community down there has been so welcoming and helpful. The people are bringing them food and drinks to help them out as they're trying to support the restoration efforts. So it really does become a team environment."
The team of six is currently assisting Blue Ridge Energy in their efforts to restore power infrastructure in the most impacted areas. Many major roads have also been compromised, making the combined efforts of over 450 workers from multiple states a logistical challenge.
"We're in communication with the other cooperative statewide associations. So when these events happen, there's communications in advance of them looking for assistance," added Allabaugh, "Sunday night, you're sitting down for dinner and the phone rings and you're out, restoring power for a member or you're being called somewhere across the country. That's just what they do."
North Carolina residents in the impacted areas are on a long road to recovery, but resources and equipment to restore the areas affected are flowing in at consistent rates, and the linemen from Bradford County are continuing this mission for those in need.
Claverack Rural Electric Cooperative has about 20 linemen on staff, so they've sent almost a third of their team down to the south. They've been able to stay in contact with home base and report back frequently with updates.
