Human Remains Discovered in Chemung River Over the Weekend
HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WENY) -- New York State Police are investigating the discovery of human remains found in the Chemung River on Saturday.
State police confirmed to WENY News that two kayakers discovered the human remains in a wooded area along the Chemung River on September 28th, around 3 P.M. Authorities did not provide any other details, but say it is an ongoing investigation and more information will be released when it becomes available.
It's far from the first time skeletal remains were found along the river in Chemung County in recent years. In May of 2022, a boater reported to police after finding a human jaw bone in the Chemung River, just east of Chemung. At the time, a search of the area recovered no additional bones. DNA testing later confirmed the remains were those of 22-year-old Matthew Barber, who went missing in November of 2020.
In May of 2020, adult skeletal remains were found along the Chemung River, between Elmira and Lowman. They were later positively identified as James Burdick of Corning, who was reported missing in November of 2018.
