Tompkins Co. Suicide Prevention Coalition to Host Youth Mental Health & Wellness Town Hall
(WENY) -- The Tompkins Co. Suicide Prevention Coalition is hosting a Youth Mental Health and Wellness Town Hall next week on October 5th. The event is open to all youth in the area and surrounding areas and their caregivers.
"We’re going to have [many] great community resources on hand. Our presentations kind of look like TED Talk presentations where we talk about [the] overall mental health of our youth. We'll have Shawn Goodman who is an author and psychologist at Ithaca High School. He wrote a book called 'How to Survive Your Parents: [A Teen's Guide to Thriving in a Difficult Family.] He's going to talk about the family dynamics and how mental health can affect our young people," said Executive Director of the Suicide Prevention and Crisis Service, Tiffany Bloss.
Bloss said she will also give a mental health presentation on suicide prevention and some of the signs to look out for if someone is suicidal, what you're able to do, and how social media plays a big role in mental health.
"Youth mental health is critically important to us. We are wrapping up Suicide Prevention Month right now but it really starts with the youth; Building some of those really healthy habits, [and] being aware of your social/emotional skills. This is a time that they’re creating some of those coping skills and we want to share with them some of the tools they can use," said Bloss.
At the Town Hall, people will also share their stories about resiliency, determination, and overcoming some of their mental health challenges. While this is something geared towards children and teens, this is also a way for parents, caregivers, and guardians to learn about spotting the signs of someone who is suicidal.
"We want them to be aware of some of those signs and learn how to ask that question, 'Are you thinking about suicide?' and then what they do after that question is asked," said Bloss.
Bloss added, "This is very unique to each individual and some of those warning signs are going to look different… Grades dropping, isolation, withdrawing. A lot of teenagers spend a lot of time in their rooms anyway but it looks a little different when they’re going through some instances where they may be considering suicide. Paying attention to [that] and some of those warning signs gives us permission to ask that question about suicide and we want people to talk really openly. It’s a scary conversation, it’s life or death but we want people to be able to be open and brave."
The Town Hall is happening on October 5th from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Tompkins County Public Library. It's free to attend and you can register for the event by clicking here, but Bloss said you can just show up to the event.
