New mural unveiled at Corning Community College
CORNING, N.Y. (WENY) -- A new mural was unveiled Friday evening at Corning Community College's Schuyler Hall. The project was a 9-month-long effort from local students from the High School Learning Center, facilitated by a professional mural artist.
The piece, called Cosmic Connections, attempts to show the connections humanity shares, even as individuals. To reflect that theme, the mural consists of different individual pieces, that were woven into a cohesive whole.
"I took all of those elements and seamlessly knit them into one design. Of course, some elements go left out, some elements got highlighted," said Alice Mizrachi, Teaching Mural Artist. "At the end, with the students approval and Corning Community College approval and Rockwell Museum approval, we all came to a collaborative agreement that this would be the final design."
Mizrachi is a New York City-based artist and educator that was brought to Corning to help facilitate this project. The piece was inspired by artist Romare Bearden, who is best known for his work displaying issues faced by African Americans.
Students who worked on the program say they enjoyed the collaborative process.
"I am really glad we are able to do this through a colorful community are piece that holds so much meaning to everyone who has worked on it," said Mandy Hakes, one of the students who worked on the mural.
The project was spurred by the Alley Art Project. The initiative, sponsored by the Rockwell Museum, has been working to create student-led murals throughout the City of Corning since 2010.
Anyone can view the mural. You can find it on Corning Community College's Spencer Hill Campus inside the Schuyler Hall Makerspace.
