Ithaca man arrested for alleged burglary after running from police

ITHACA, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Tompkins County Sheriff's Office announced a burglary suspect has been arrested in Ithaca after he ran away from police during the early morning hours of Tuesday, September 3rd. Police say Michael Thomas, 35 of Ithaca, was seen walking away from a business on Elmira Road that was closed and in an area where a string of larcenies have occurred, and that after police tried to talk to him, he ran into a wooded area.
Police say Thomas jumped into a pond in order to evade police. After what police termed a lengthy ground search, Thomas was arrested in the area of Five Mile Drive.
Thomas was taken to Cayuga Medical Center and then released into police custody. He has been charged with burglary, criminal possession of stolen property, and possession of burglar tools.
Police say Thomas was on parole for simielar crimes when he was caught, and has been remanded without bail.
