ITHACA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Employees of the United Auto Workers Local 2300 have gone on strike in response to Cornell University's most recent offer in contract negotiations. Throughout the weekend, employees of UAW Local 2300 have continued to negotiate with Cornell University over a new labor contract.

"Today we take it to the streets. UAW members will wait for the University to come to the table with a REAL offer that reflects the truly essential nature of our workforce, and the team here in Region 9 will continue to stand in solidarity with them as long as it takes.” said UAW Region 9 Daniel Vicente.

According to the UAW, Cornell failed to respond with a new offer by the deadline of 10 p.m. last night, which triggered the strike. Members of UAW Local 2300 have demanded wage increases, a cost of living adjustment, and a safer workplace.

Proposals issued by both sides have been rejected during negotiations. In a statement from Cornell University, the University says that their negotiations have been in good faith.

The University offered UAW employees a 17.5 percent increase in wages compounded over four years of the proposed contract, as well as a promotion that would give the lowest paid employees an immediate 10.3 percent wage increase. This is in addition to proposed enhancements related to health and personal leave, vacation, and health and safety.

UAW officials rejected this offer last evening, as it was deemed insufficient by the union. UAW national leadership countered for a wage increase of 25 percent, as well as the elimination of tiered wages.

UWA President Shawn Fain and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand have both contacted Cornell's Interim President in hopes of finding a solution.
