CANISTEO, N.Y. (WENY) -- Recovery and cleanup efforts continued in Canisteo on Saturday morning. This time, several volunteers from Team Rubicon joined forces to help people with whatever they need.

When disaster strikes, members of Team Rubicon, also known as "the greyshirts," are called to action. The veteran-led humanitarian organization has local members who helped out in Canisteo by working on houses damaged by the remnants of Tropical Depression Debby.

Two of the houses they worked on ended up being a total loss and will need to be condemned.

"This house was one that got quite badly flooded about two feet inside," said Robert Carter, the Southern Tier Metro Administrator for Team Rubicon. "So what we do, we take out all the debris and all the damaged furniture, all the damaged appliances, try and clean up inside as best we can, and make it ready for them to rebuild."

In collaboration with the Southern Baptists Mission, Team Rubicon workers volunteered their time and services to people in the area, free of charge. Members of the team say every job and situation is different.

"I think there's still like 300 plus people that are in need of service so, it's a really big project," said Diane Cretella, one of the Team Rubicon volunteers. "A lot of the homes-- we just came from a house where the homeowner wasn't there but the, I mean, there's four inches of mud inside the house and just everything is shifted all over inside."

Team Rubicon is just one of many groups who are assisting those in the area who have dialed the 2-1-1 helpline. Several of the volunteers in Canisteo say they are driven to serve and will help in any way they can.

"We've seen some people really in some terrible situations and we always try to help them," said Carter. "Not only do we muck out the house or cut down their trees or whatever, we try to help keep them happy a little bit, give a bit of encouragement too. Don't worry you'll get through this, we're here to help you."
