WASHINGTON, D.C. (WENY News) -- Last week’s flooding and the devastation it left behind has caught the attention of several federal lawmakers. Some members of Congress have visited the region to assess the damage and offer support.

Rep. Glenn “GT” Thompson (R-PA) visited parts of the northern tier over the weekend. Thompson’s office shared the following statement with WENY News:

“Congressman Thompson visited the region last Saturday morning to offer immediate assistance where he could. Our office worked with AT&T over the weekend to restore connectivity in a Lycoming County community and was able to get mobile food bank resources dispatched to the region. We remain in constant communication with individual constituents who need assistance, local officials, the Governor’s office and FEMA as we wait for the preliminary damage assessment from PEMA and FEMA officials.”

“My office is in touch with local and state officials to offer support and to help connect impacted communities with federal resources. As Pennsylvanians rebuild and recover from this devastating flooding, I will keep monitoring FEMA’s response to make sure Northern Tier communities get the assistance they need,” said Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) in a statement to WENY News.

“In the days following the devastation of Hurricane Debby, I have been working closely with Governor Hochul and local leaders to support any request for federal assistance for all counties impacted by the storm. I am pushing FEMA to provide the resources Upstate New York needs to recover and rebuild stronger. To affected families: my office is here to help," said Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY).

Gillibrand says if and when a federal disaster is declared, NY residents can reach out to her office at https://www.gillibrand.senate.gov/help/help-for-new-yorkers/ to be connected with relevant resources and options for assistance.

Rep. Nick Langworthy (R- NY) recently visited parts of Steuben County to meet with local officials and assess the damage.

“It was heartbreaking to see the destruction and hear from residents who rebuilt after Tropical Storm Fred in 2021, only to face devastation again. This is a time for all of us at the federal, state, and local levels to come together to fight for a FEMA disaster declaration—including individual assistance,” said Langworthy in a recent post on social media. “The people of the Southern Tier are independent, resilient, and tough as nails, but now is the time they need our help, and we must make sure they are not forgotten.”
