Habitat for Humanity ReStore reopens its doors after more than a year
CORNING, N.Y. (WENY) -- After being closed for more than a year due to a devastating fire, the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in corning has opened its doors once again. The store has a fresh, new look, and has welcomed the community in again.
"We're very excited here to be reopened. We closed in July of 2023 from a devastating fire, so we're excited to see everyone, excited to serve our community once again," said Jonathan Wiley, the ReStore Manager.
After the fire, a large portion of the building was left unusable. With a lot of hard work and months of improvements, the store has new insulation and spaces to fill with donations.
"We came in, painted fresh paint everywhere, floor to ceiling really. We put in a new floor, moved our counter, we did a lot of work out in our garage area with insulation and new walls, and we're also putting in a new donation center," said Wiley.
The store has been open for less than a week, and its already been crowded with people excited to shop. Employees say its been great to be back open and get back to a sense of normalcy.
"[Customers] have been saying that they're happy that we're back open," said Jerrell Sacket, a ReStore employee. "It's been a long time since the fire, and they've been without the restore for a year, a year and a couple of months, and they're excited to see it open and get stuff going again."
The proceeds from the ReStore go towards building homes in Steuben County for Habitat for Humanity's partner families. The store is stocked with furniture and goods, ready to be sold.
"Just to keep serving the community and keep doing what we used to do before the fire. So, if we can improve upon that great but just continue our success. officials say they are excited for the store to be an active part of the community once again," said Wiley.
The ReStore isn't accepting donations in store quite yet, but you can call (607) 377-5524 to schedule a pick up donation for large items. The ReStore hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
