Westfield community shows resilience in flood recovery effort
WESTFIELD, P.A. (WENY) -- In the Northern Tier, Westfield is picking up the pieces after flash floods swept through the borough and rivers reached record highs. There are now several locations where locals can get food, water, and supplies while the cleanup efforts are underway.
After over five inches of rain fell on Westfield thanks to the remnants of Hurricane Debby, a flash flood emergency was declared for the area. Now that the rain has passed and rivers receded, recovery operations are in full force, with the community stepping in extensively.
"The community has really reached out. to donate stuff, they gave a ton of water, a ton of food, those kinds of things," said Tioga County Commissioner Shane Nickerson, "I think that what we need to do is move into cleaning products, paper towels, disinfectant stuff, rubber gloves, Anything like that to help the cleanup effort, but we can't say how much we appreciate the support of the community."
Several local officials including State House Representative Clint Owlett, provided an update on the storm response and aftermath earlier today. Search and rescue operations are ongoing for at least one missing person near Knoxville. One important takeaway was damage documentation, and how affected residents can recover.
"it is important that you document what you lost, the damages you suffered, so that we can collect those to report them to PEMA and FEMA. We are trying to meet the threshold so that we can get some state and federal aid in our community," added Tioga County Commissioner Marc Rice.
Crary Hose Volunteer Fire Chief William Goltz stated that there were over 30 swift water rescues in and around the borough during the floods.
Food, water, meals, produce, and cleaning supplies were on hand for those in need. Generous individuals and families came to the Crary Hose Volunteer Fire Company to deliver and collect supplies for their neighbors in need.
"We've got a lot of donations, a lot of food, a lot of water, cleaning supplies. If anybody needs anything, we probably got it or can get it or can get it to them. We have drivers out on the road distributing stuff, so we have what you need. I'm going to be here until I can't stand up anymore," added Mitchell Gruver, owner of Papa's Patties, who were at the Westfield Borough Building providing supplies to those in need.
The Crary Hose Volunteer Fire Company in Westfield, and the Knoxville Volunteer Fire Department are both official locations where you can give or receive supplies during the recovery process.
