UPDATE 8:00 P.M. (8/9): Steuben County has lifted the evacuation order for the Hamlet of Campbell. The evacuations for Jasper and Woodhull remain in effect because roads to access the communities are closed, according to officials.


UPDATE 7:10 P.M. (8/9): Steuben County has lifted the evacuation orders for the Villages of Addison and Canisteo. Officials say the floodwaters there have receded. Residents are now allowed to return to their homes.

Officials are advising folks to travel with caution, as many roads in the area still remain closed.


UPDATE 5:40 P.M. (8/9): An evacuation has been issued for the Hamlet of Campbell along County Route 25 and Savona Campbell Road. Officials say the Cohocton River is experiencing moderate flooding and is expected to rise multiple feet in the coming hours.


UPDATE 3:10 P.M. 8/9 -- Steuben County has issued the following travel restrictions, 

•              State Route 248 from CR 60 to CR  98 Town of West Union

•              County Route 126 from Reiman Rd to SR 417 Town of Greenwood

•              County Route 129 Town of Woodhull

•              County Route 11 from Worth Rd Town of Bath to Risingville Hamlet Town of Thurston

•              County Route 14 from CR 15 Town of Bath to CR 119 Town of Canisteo

•              County Route 21 from CR 102 (Woodhull) to South Rd (Rathbone)

•              State Route 36 closed between SR 248 to SR 417

•              County Route 28 from CR 64 (Hartsville) to SR 248 (Canisteo)

•              County Route 98 (West Union)

•              County Route 77 from CR 74 to Waldo Rd (Prattsburgh)

And it's worth nothing that many other roadways in Steuben County might be damaged or unpassable. 

As a result, county officials are asking that no unnecessary travel should happen until further notice. 

Emergency officials are warning to not drive in water covered roads, turn around, don't drown. 


UPDATE 2:45 P.M. 8/9 -- According to a WENY News reporter near the scene, Main Street in Mansfield, PA is flooded and currently closed. 


UPDATE 2:30 P.M. 8/9 --  The Village of Canisteo has announced evacuations along the dyke. Specifically houses along Ordaway Lane, Jackson Street, East Main Street and Cliffside Drive. The American Red Cross is setting up a shelter at the Hornell High School. If you can't get to the Hornell High School, the American Legion on 61 West Main Street is offering shuttle transportation to the shelter. 


UPDATE 1:30 P.M. (8/9): Steuben County has issued an Emergency Evacuation Order for the Village of Addison's Southside along Tuscarora Creek. Officials say flash flooding upstream has damaged property and is threatening the safety of residents downstream.

A Red Cross shelter is being set up at the Corning-Painted Post High School Fieldhouse.


UPDATE 1 P.M. (8/9) -- Steuben County has issued an Emergency Evacuation for the hamlet of Jasper due to leaking propane storage tanks due to the flash flooding.

Officials say all residents of Jasper and those within a half-mile of the hamlet should leave the area immediately.


UPDATE: 12:45 P.M. 08/08/2024 -- Steuben County has issued an Emergency Order for the Evacuation of the hamlet of Woodhull along Tuscarora Creek. County officials say flash flooding that is upstream will threaten people's safety downstream and has already damaged property. All residents should head to higher ground. 


BATH, NY (WENY) -- Steuben County has declared a state of emergency due to flash flooding caused by the remnants of Tropical Storm Debby moving across the region.

As of 12PM Friday, there are multiple roads that are covered with water or otherwise impassable. The county's emergency operations center is handling dozens of emergency calls for assistance at this time.

The town of Greenwood has also declared a local state of emergency, prohibiting all traffic.

People are being urged to stay off the roads until further notice, so that emergency vehicles and public works can respond to the emergency situation. People should not travel unless absolutely necessary.

The county Office of Emergency Management says people should not call 911 unless there is a true emergency.

The county-wide State of Emergency will remain in effect until further notice.
