Elmira Police Make Multiple Arrests at Two Overnight Disturbances
(WENY) -- Officers with the Elmira Police department had an active overnight, dealing with two related large disturbances at two separate locations in the city in a span of about two hours.
On Sunday, August 4th, Elmira Police Officers arrested several people after a large disturbance on the 200 block of W. Water Street. Around 1:28 a.m., police were made aware of a large party at a local bar and according to EPD, it was The Playground.
When police arrived on scene, several fights ensued in the road of W. Water St. Officers immediately tried to break up the fights. While working to arrest people from the first fight, officers were surrounded and several other fights broke out on the same block. EPD requested more backup from other agencies. Officers dealt with the unruly crowd for more than an hour until the fights were finally broken up and the crowd began to disperse.
During the first fight, police say they made nine arrests of people accused of taking part in the disturbance, and also had to use pepper spray. Charges include disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, obstruction of governmental administration, and second-degree harassment. EPD said several people ran from police while officers were trying to arrest people and were unable to catch them, due to the large crowd.
Just a few hours later at 3:30 a.m., police received multiple calls of another large disturbance on the 400 block of W. Hudson St. On arrival, police said the large crowd was made up of the same people at an after party, who were at the disturbance on W. Water Street.
Elmira police say officers began to clear people out of the street who were causing a disturbance, which ended up in five more arrests on charges of disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and obstruction of governmental administration.
Anyone with information regarding the large disturbances on W. Water St. and W. Hudson St. are asked to contact EPD.
The department it was assisted in the ordeal by the Chemung County Sheriff's Office, Elmira Heights Police Department, Horseheads Police Department, New York State Police, Elmira Fire Department, and Erway Ambulance.
