Tanglewood Nature Center gets $1 million federal grant to build canopy walkway
ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Tanglewood Nature Center and Museum received $1 million in a federal grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission to help the organization build their planned canopy walkway. Congressman Nick Langworthy announced the funding Thursday.
Tanglewood's canopy walkway will be a 900-foot-long path that will be suspended 70 feet above the ground. It is designed to give visitors views of the tree canopy and the cliffs along the Chemung River.
"The Tanglewood Canopy Walkway will give visitors a new perspective of nature that they otherwise wouldn’t see from the ground. This funding gives us another opportunity to educate through recreation, blending a unique experience with our programming,” said Elaine Smith, executive director of Tanglewood Nature Center.
According to Langworthy's office, the completed project will attract new visitors and generate the facility an estimated $171,000 in new tax revenue within three tears of its completion.
“I have worked closely with Tanglewood and advocated for this funding to ensure we can stimulate local economic growth by attracting thousands of new visitors to our area," said Langworthy, a Republican.
Funding for Tanglewood's Canopy Walkway now totals $3.5 million. The organization has received $600,000 in state funding, $1.9 million from local funding, and now an additional $1 million from the Appalachian Regional Commission.
