New financial assistance for low-and-middle income families

ALBANY, NY (WENY)--Tuesday GOV. KATHY HOCHUL ANNOUNCED $350 million IN FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR LOW TO MIDDLE INCOME FAMILIES.
THE funding IS COMING THROUGH THE EMPIRE CHILD CREDIT PROGRAM—WHICH IS A TAX CREDIT PROGRAM THAT HELPS FAMILIES GET DIRECT ASSISTANCE.
BY THE END OF AUGUST GOV. HOCHUL SAID ONE MILLION NEW YORK FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN WILL receive A CHILD TAX CREDIT CHECK IN THE MAIL.
“It's not just making life livable in New York, it's also making it affordable for every single family, and we won't stop fighting,” said Hochul.
THE AMOUNT FOR EACH FAMILY WILL VARY DEPENDING ON INCOME AND FAMILY SIZE-- WITH SOME FAMILIES GETTING UP TO $330 PER CHILD.
THE GOVERNOR STRESSEd ELIGIBLE TAXPAYERS DON’T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING TO receive THIS PAYMENT—IT'S ALL BASED ON NEW YORKERS TAX FILINGS.
IF TAXPAYERS received THE EMPIRE STATE CHILD CREDIT OF AT LEAST $100 ON THEIR 2023 STATE TAX RETURN -- THEY WILL RECEIVE THIS ADDITIONAL PAYMENT IN THE MAIL.
HOCHUL SAid THE TIMING OF THIS ASSISTANCE WILL BE PARTICULARLY HELPFUL FOR FAMILIES AS THEY GET THEIR KIDS READY TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL IN JUST A FEW WEEKS.
“With this check, this is how parents will be able to cover the cost of back-to-school supplies and even some clothes in there. And that's why I'm so proud of this,” she said.
GOV. HOCHUL WENT ON TO SAY THAT BY HELPING NEW YORKERS HANDLE CHANGES TO COST OF LIVING – IT PROVIDES A BOOST FOR THE STATE’S OVERALL ECONOMIC HEALTH.
“The strain on working families is too much, and we're losing some families who are going elsewhere where they don't have the same challenges. And that actually threatens New York State's long-term viability,” she said.
