No More First Arena: LECOM Unveiled as New Title Sponsor
UPDATE 3:30PM 7/30: At a press conference inside Elmira's former First Arena, the Chemung County IDA and LECOM announced that the sports and event center will now be known as the LECOM Events Center. The partnership between the Chemung County IDA and LECOM is for 5 years and roughly $500,000.
"There were a lot of companies that we talked to, a lot that we talked about, but I think the key was to find a relationship that made sense not only economically but community-wise, and that's why the LECOM opportunity was a great opportunity for us," said Chemung County IDA Chairman Mark Margeson.
Dr. Richard Terry, the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at LECOM says the partnership will give the medical school an increased presence in the city and help students learn aspects of medical care during events at the LECOM Events Center.
"We're fortunate enough to be in Chemung County, and fortunate enough to partner with the Chemung County IDA to develop the LECOM Events Center. This will enhance the well-being of our community, and what it does, it creates a positive environment for businesses, families and individuals and represents LECOM's commitment to this community," said Dr. Terry.
LECOM says they plan to have health screenings at all events held at the new event center. Officials say they plan to paint the outside of the building and then put up new LECOM Events Center signs. This will happen before the Elmira Aviators season starts in October.
UPDATE 1:15PM 7/30: An updated feature on the First Arena website may be a leaked indicator of the arena's new name.
A header tab on firstarena.net displays the name LECOM Events Center, with the tagline "We Make Entertainment - The Southern Tier's Premier Multi-Purpose Facility, Conveniently Located in the Heart of Downtown Elmira, NY."
A press conference to formally announce the re-naming of the arena is scheduled for 3PM Tuesday. WENY News will carry the press conference live on the WENY TV News Facebook page.
ELMIRA, NY (WENY) -- First Arena in Elmira has been undergoing a lot of chance as of late, with multiple changes in arena management, and hockey teams. Now it's about to undergo perhaps its most visible change from the outside - a new name.
The Chemung County Industrial Development Agency will hold a press conference Tuesday afternoon to announce the official re-naming of First Arena. On Monday, just ghost letters would be seen on the exterior of the arena, with its First Arena logo having been removed.
The arena was originally called the Coach USA Center, when it opened in the year 2000. It became known as First Arena, and has carried that name since 2004.
WENY News will have continuing coverage of the name unveiling Tuesday afternoon.
