Wine Country Classic Boat Show dazzles with vintage vessels and watersport exhibition
HAMMONDSPORT, N.Y. (WENY) -- Boating enthusiasts gathered from all around for the conclusion of this year's Wine Country Classic Boat Show. The display of vintage vessels was accompanied by a watersports exhibition.
The 41st annual Wine Country Classic Boat Show wrapped up on a high note with a watersports exhibition featuring wakeboarding, a hydrofoil, and slalom skiing, water skiing with one ski. That was of course in addition to the dozens of vintage boats on display, some close to a century old.
"We have a rich history here in the Finger Lakes and especially on Keuka we had a Penn Yan boat building up in Penn Yan and so that was the beginning of it. The people kept those Penn Yan's, they handed it down from generation to generation. But people come from all over the country for this because their grandparents, their great grandparents, their parents owned a boat. And so they want to preserve that history and there's nothing like a wooden boat," remarked 2024 Chair of the WCCBS, Lynn Ramsey.
On Saturday, Several of the boats were judged on their appearance, interior fixtures, engines, instruments and hardware, and the quality of finish. This year's show heavily featured Canadian boat builders. Many of the boats were restorations from original boats manufactured generations ago. For Sunday's attractions it was all out on Keuka Lake for a watersport exhibition.
"It shows that people are enjoying the water, learning from the young age, and staying with it. The oldest participant we had this year was 72, still skiing. So it shows people who are living on the lake or summering on the lake and what they do during the day and how much they enjoy the water," added Ramsey.
Both locals and out-of-town travelers were able to revel in Keuka's boating culture, and watch some spectacular stunts on the lake.
The theme selection for the 42nd annual Wine Country Classic boat show is set to take place this Thursday.
