ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- The northbound lane of the Clemens Center Bridge in Elmira is closed until further notice after a fire broke out underneath the north side around 2:45 p.m. on Thursday, July 11. According to the Fire Marshal on the scene, there are no known injuries, and there's no confirmation as of this time on how the fire started.

"It's still under investigation," said Calvin Cady, Fire Marshal from the City of Elmira. "All we know right now is it's a significant fire under the north side of the Clemens Center Bridge."

Huge plumes of smoke could be seen rising from underneath the bridge along with visible flames. It was reported the fire was put out by firefighters around 3 p.m., minutes after they arrived to the scene.

Just three days ago, crews worked to clear homeless encampments under the Clemens Center Bridge. However, they only began cleanup on the south side of the bridge and had yet to start on the north side where first responders with the Elmira Fire Department have confirmed there was a homeless encampment.

New York State Department of Transportation workers arrived on scene around 4:30 P.M. and started investigating the structural integrity of the bridge before coming to a decision regarding closures.

For now, local officials recommend seeking alternate routes in the area and are asking anyone with information to come forward.

They are asking people with any information related to this incident to please call the Elmira Police Department at (607)737-5626. Information can also be anonymously given to the tip line at (607)271-HALT or OPERATION HALT at www.cityofelmira.net.
