SOUTHERN TIER, N.Y. (WENY) -- During the regular school year, children have reliable access to meals. But during the summertime, that can change.  

According to the Food Bank of the Southern Tie, a growing number of people are experiencing food insecurity.  

“I mean, we’re in poverty,” Sheri Frail, GST BOCES Food Service Manager, said. “All of our schools are C.E.P. so that just shows how much we need this program.” 

For at-risk children, who are out of school in the summer months, there are places they can go so they do not have to go hungry.  

“We have kids that, I just feel, they don’t eat enough as it is...because they’re just so hungry when they come here,” Frail said. “They want two, three meals. I just know there’s food insecurity everywhere.” 

To combat the problem, Frail said the Summer Food Service Program fills the gap when school is not in session, ensuring that children are properly fed.  

“Anybody from the ages of zero to 18,” she said. “Get a free meal, breakfast or lunch.” 

There are nearly 30 sites in the Southern Tier for children to take advantage of. 

“...down in Elmira has six sites, I have three actually in Bath, I have two in Avoca, I have three in Hammondsport,” she said. “They’re everywhere. Hornell has seven sites. Addison has three sites...Corning. Everybody has sites.”  

Breakfast and lunch typically have the same serving times across the region.  

“Normally, it’s dictated by the school when they want their lunches or breakfast...so, we go right along with what they want,” she said.  

Frail said being able to see people take advantage of the program means that it is working, and children are getting fed. 

“I know there’s just such a need here,” she said.
