ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Elmira Mayor Dan Mandell retired from his position at the Chemung County Sheriff's Office after over 30 years in the organization, according to an announcement on Facebook Tuesday.

Mandell, a Corrections Officer with the department, started working at the Chemung County Jail in 1988. He was promoted multiple times during his tenure at the corrections department, eventually working his way up to become Superintendent of the Jail.

In 2014, Mandell stepped down from his full-time duties and has since worked as a part-time Corrections Officer to handle the Sheriff's Office accreditation and re-accreditation processes.

In a phone call with WENY News, Mandell said he enjoyed his time with the department but it was time to retire.

Mandell, a Republican, is currently serving his third term as Mayor of Elmira. He was first elected to the position in 2015.

The Sheriff's Office thanked him for his years of service and wished him the best in his retirement.
