UPDATE JULY 2ND, 9 P.M.: At the Candor Village Board special meeting, trustees accepted the resignation of Eric Halsted. 

Deputy Mayor Gwen Isham read a statement from Halsted, saying, "I [Halsted] believe that in the best interest of the Village of Candor, that I am no longer mayor.  As of 7 p.m. on July 2nd, 2024, I am resigning."

The village board of trustees gave this statement to WENY News:

"Today, the Village of Candor Board learned that Eric Halstead was arrested for criminal charges related to the misuse of government funds. He has submitted his resignation as mayor, and the village board voted to accept his resignation immediately, effective immediately. Over the coming weeks we will be cooperating with law enforcement officials as the investigation continues," said Isham.

Halstead has been arraigned and released without bail with a future court appearance scheduled for August 5th.


CANDOR, N.Y. (WENY) -- New York State Police announced on Tuesday, July 2nd that the mayor of the Village of Candor was arrested on Monday, July 1st on corruption and larceny charges. Eric Halsted, 67, faces charges of Corrupting the Government and Grand Larceny, both felonies. 

According to police, an investigation revealed that while Halstead was mayor, he withdrew over $23,000 in cash from the Village for his own personal use over several years. Over time, police say he replaced roughly $19,000 of the money he took, but that he still owes money to the village. 

The Office of the New York State Comptroller assisted in the investigation. Village officials said they had no comment when reached by WENY News.

Halstead has since been arraigned and released without bail with a future court appearance scheduled for August 5th. While the reason for the meeting wasn't given, the Candor Village Board is holding a special meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 2nd at the DPW Building located at 8 Rich St.
