BATH, N.Y. (WENY) -- Five officers with the Steuben County Sheriff's Office were honored by the Steuben County Legislature Monday for their role in the capture of Alyssa Jane Venable, a triple-murder suspect who was on the run from Virginia authorities.

Lieutenants Brando Logsdon and Chris Kennedy, Deputies Joseph Saltsman and Matt Butler and Investigator Brandon Brown were commended for their professionalism, leadership and service while responding to the multi-county police chase on June 6.

According to Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard, Logsdon sent Saltsman and Butler to strategic locations along I-86 with tire spikes. Allard says these men's positions caused Venable's vehicle to stop, ending the police chase.

Kennedy was behind the SWAT team response, which included flying a drone over the stopped car to evaluate the driver of the vehicle while she was still in the car.

Brown was behind the plan to take Venable from her car, in which first responders approached the car with a ballistic shield and a distraction device. Officers were able to remove her from the vehicle safely.

Allard told the men during the ceremony: “Not only did you display quick and effective evaluation of a dynamic life and death situation, but you also successfully stopped a fleeing person accused of murdering three people, and utilizing your training and tools, took that armed person into custody with no injury to law enforcement and only minor injury to the suspect.”

Venable is facing three counts of second-degree murder and use of a firearm while committing a felony. She allegedly killed her three roommates in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

Venable is currently in the custody of law enforcement in Virginia.
