(WENY) -- Branchport United Methodist Church members are hosting their 10th annual Red, White, and Blue 5K this Thursday. What began as a church fundraiser, turned into a community-oriented event.

"[We] welcome in families and [it] became an outreach filled with celebration and fun, instead of [a] necessity. What began as something for the church to pay for the fuel bills, [to] keep the light on, has turned into a community event to kick off the race," said Pastor Kim Lyons.

The 5K is the start of the 4th of July celebrations in Branchport. Afterwards there's a parade, chicken barbecue, and fireworks to cap off the night.

Cindy Heselton, the Main Event Coordinator with Branchport UMC said the town comes alive on the 4th of July. Lyons also said people are encouraged to dress patriotic.

"It's so fun to see families really get into the spirit and don their red, white, and blue. Some come in tutus, some come with fun headbands. Even the dogs and strollers are [decked out]," said Lyons.

Lyons said the proceeds from the 5K go towards important outreaches in their congregation.

"A part of it's going to [the] Yates County Pet Partner Connection, which is great outreach in keeping pets with their families in our community. As well as we are using it to continue to stock our blessing cupboard on the front lawn of our church. [It] offers some needs and things for our community... This will ensure that we can carry on these things as we build relationships with our neighbors and those within the community," said Lyons.

The 5K will begin at 8 a.m. and afterwards is the Kids Fun Run.

The online registration ends today (June 30th) but people can register in person for the race starting at 7 a.m. on July 4th. The registration fee is $30 per person for the 5K which includes a t-shirt while supplies last. The Kids Fun Run is a one-mile race and is free for children who want to participate.
