Hurricane Beryl is smashing records in the Atlantic Basin
As of the 8 pm advisory from the National Hurricane Center, Beryl had rapidly intensified into a Category 1 hurricane with sustained winds of 80 mph. Hurricanes are rare in June and especially rare in the area where Beryl is tracking through. There has only been one recorded hurricane form east of the Caribbean in June (the Trinidad Hurricane of 1933). The National Hurricane Center has Beryl reaching major hurricane strength before reaching the Windward Islands. This will be the first major hurricane to do so prior to August.
This hurricane is in an environment that is ripe for strengthening ( very warm ocean temperature, high moisture and light wind shear). These favorable conditions will be present into Tuesday, causing her rapidly strengthen into a powerful hurricane.
