PENN YAN, NY (WENY) -- A former Horseheads Village Trustee will spend the next six months in jail in Yates County, following a serious DWI crash in 2023.

Fifty-three year old Mark Cronin was sentenced Tuesday in Yates County Court, after pleading guilty in April to charges of vehicular assault and driving while intoxicated. Cronin was intoxicated when the pickup truck he was driving failed to stop at a stop sign in Penn Yan, hitting a van carrying eight people, including children, on July 4th, 2023. Some of the crash victims were airlifted to area hospitals for treatment.

According to the Yates County District Attorney, Cronin will spend six months in jail, followed by five years probation. He will also lose his driver's license for one year, and has to pay a $1,000 fine, along with other conditions.

Cronin was removed from his position as Horseheads Village Trustee when he pleaded guilty to the two charges in April. In December 2023, he rejected a plea deal and was indicted in January.

According to data with the Yates County Sheriff's Office, Cronin was booked into the jail shortly before 11AM Tuesday.
