ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- The efforts to restore and repair the clock tower atop Elmira's City Hall has been ongoing for months. Thr project is set to cost a total of $3.5 million, with $600,000 coming in the form of American Rescue Plan funding.

New concerns have been unearthed during the tower's restoration, including water intrusion, and structural integrity.

In a City of Elmira Newsletter, an update was provided on the restoration project and some of the new problems that it revealed.

Among the current issues plaguing the tower, it was revealed that the clock tower and roof has structural integrity issues.

Mortar had been failing and both water and weeds had begun to intrude on the structure.

The newsletter added that these issues can create safety hazards for those both inside and outside the building.
