BATH, N.Y. (WENY) -- On Monday night, several young adults in Steuben County were recognized as part of the 33rd Annual Jack Lisi Awards.  In remembrance of Jack Lisi who served as Sheriff of Steuben County for 18 years, the goal is to continue Lisi's legacy of caring and helping young adults with their future success.

"It's a great thing. This assists them in achieving their next level, their next step in their journey, and it's a great thing. We've assisted hundreds of students over the last 30 years and many of them...have done great things because of the award, and the award is just a little bit of an extra boost to help them make that next step possible," said Mark Alger, president of the Jack Lisi Youth Awards Committee.

Nineteen students living in Steuben County or enrolled at a partnering school district were given the award this year.  Nominated by an adult, the awards recognized students who are often overlooked, but have overcome obstacles and working toward to new goals.  The $2,500 award can be put toward education or work-related materials.

"It feels great, honestly, because I know that like I'm not the only one actually going through all this stuff. So it kind of feels great knowing that, like there's other people also struggling and they're not giving up," said Jordanne Hand, an award recipient.

Joshua Goodwin received this award back in 2021, and has been back to speak to students every year, and he says the program makes a difference.

"It just makes me continue to just encourage them, continue to just try to lift up people, like Jack Lisi lifted up them and the donors lift up them. It's just an encouragement, the reminder that they got the support that they needed and that really just helped them, and I got that too," said Goodwin.

The money for these awards comes from donations.  The full list of recipients can be found below.
