ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- A small group of community members laced up on Wednesday morning to walk four miles and explore Elmira in a heart-healthy and fitness-fun way. Charlie Hunter, the owner of Rye Bar and Restaurant, and The Garage met at 9 a.m., and after some friendly introductions, the group set off on the walk.

"We have started a community walk every Wednesday and Saturday at 9 a.m. sharp. We walk from the garage here at Rye up to the points in West Elmira and back," says Charlie Hunter.

Each walk lasts about an hour and fifteen minutes. Everyone is welcome to join, and there are no prerequisites required. The only rule? Enjoy the fresh air, beauty, and history of West Elmira.

"I think it depends on the group. it's not just up to me. For me, it's good to have a schedule and I'm getting out on Wednesdays and Saturdays, which is great. I think that helps other people as well. If we expand, it will be up to the community. If people wanted to, the times or different areas, or that kind of thing, totally open to me standing in that direction," says Hunter.

Participants are encouraged to take it slow, enjoy the walk, and chat with new people and old friends, but remember not to over-exert themselves. No one has to finish the walk, and participants can walk for as little or as long as they want.

"Take a moment and admire this. Honestly, West Elmira is beautiful and so I am always amazed. I see something different every time I walk a walk. The houses all real unique and interesting and beautiful," Hunter shared before hitting the road.

The new community bonding event starts and ends at The Garage located at 357 Davis St. Every walk ends with free coffee and time to cool down with the group.

The next walk will take place on Saturday, June 8th.
