Elmira Police Enforce Zero Tolerance on Orbeez Gun Misuse
ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Elmira Police Department says they have received numerous complaints about the misuse of Orbeez Guns in the city. People have reported to EPD incidents of the guns being fired at pedestrians, homes, and parked cars, causing damage. This has been the case for many people just trying to live their day-to-day lives.
"We've had a number of complaints from just innocent people, bystanders, homeowners, owners of vehicles," says Capt. Chris Zelko with the Elmira Police Department.
EPD says, Orbeez Guns should only be used on private property. While the products is legal to buy and own, Chief Zelko says using them in public specifically within Elmira is against the law. Authorities compared this to being similar to rules and laws around BB and Airsoft Guns.
"We've had kids at bus stops getting off of the bus getting, getting struck. We want parents and kids and anyone that's using these Orbeez guns to know that it won't be tolerated," added Zelko.
According to city authorities, City Ordinance 18-2 prohibits the use of any device that throws bullets, stones, or similar objects in public places. Officials added, if someone violates this ordinance it can result in fines, jail time, or confiscation of the Orbeez Gun.
"We've had a number of elderly people {that} have been struck just on the sidewalk or outside of their house. Some of the property damage stuff would definitely be considered malicious," says Zelko.
The Elmira Police Department is taking a strict stance on this issue that has become consistent in the last two week. Parents and guardians are asked to make sure their children do not take these guns outside of the home or use them in ways that break the city or New York State laws.
