Cycle around Watkins Glen International at the first Bike Night
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (WENY) -- Watkins Glen International is often a place filled with stands of fans and race cars speeding by; however, this time it was locals riding their bicycles around the track.
"We have Bike Night," says President of Watkins Glen International, Dawn Burlew. "We're going to introduce a whole group to a trip around Watkins Glen International that has never probably done it before.
The track offered two routes, a 2.4 mile, and a 3.4 mile. Adults, teens, kids, and families clipped on their helmets and hit one of the two courses that professional race car drivers often race on.
"We got it at another track that, a sister track that we do some work with, and so we thought why not bring it to Watkins Glen, because we have such a super world course," explained Burlew.
Community members are calling the speedy track experience a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Jeff and Alison say it's been two or more decades since they visited Watkins Glen International.
"We had a couple people show up. They said this is on their bucket list and they actually never thought they'd be able to bike the track. You know people come and they can do laps on the track and they participate and attend our events, but to actually take their bike on the track we have, that's nothing we've ever done before," explained Burlew.
