Elmira Police: Officer shoots aggressive, unleashed dog in the Southside

UPDATE (5/7): WENY News spoke to Elmira Police again Tuesday evening to clarify the condition of the dog who was shot in Elmira Tuesday morning.
According to police, the dog was given back to the owner, and was euthanized.
ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Elmira Police have confirmed to WENY News that an officer with the E.P.D. shot and killed a dog they say was aggressive and unleashed on the morning of Tuesday, May 7th. According to police, the dog charged the officer when he was walking on Wallace Street after responding to assist a medical call.
"This isn't the first time this has happened, but it's been a couple of years. It's not uncommon to see large, aggressive dogs not on a leash in Elmira. Sometimes they get spooked, and unfortunately other times this happens," said Lt. Joseph Runyan with the E.P.D.
Police say the officer involved in the incident fired two shots. The shooting is under investigation, as is standard procedure for all officer involved shootings with the E.P.D.
