ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Starting on the evening of Tuesday, April 9th, along with Wednesday, April 10th, the Clemens Center in Elmira will be home to a new kind of rhythm as the performers of ‘Stomp’ take to the stage. In Stomp musical instruments take a back seat, and instead, all the vibrant sounds are created using household items and everyday objects.

“We’re bringing our full production. That means every prop we’ve ever used and a lot of good movers. I’m a dancer, but we have some drummers, we have some actors, some comedians, so they’re gonna get everything in the kitchen sink," Cary Lamb Jr., a performer in Stomp.

Contrary to what one might expect, the performers stomp for only about 10 percent of the show. The remaining 90 percent is a delightful mix of choreography and improvisation.

Becoming a Stomp performer doesn’t require a laundry list of skills.

“I’m a horrible dancer,” jokes performer Declan Hayden. “I’ve never danced in my life before joining Stomp, and at prom, I stood on the sides and watched everybody else and cried, but I drummed for a really long time, and that was pretty helpful. We have dancers, we have actors, we have comedians, we have just all walks of life. You really never know what could bring someone into the Stompverse.”

The heart of the show is far from serious. Audience members are encouraged to interpret its message in their own way, as they enjoy the amalgamation of dance, comedy, and theatrical talent.

Lamb Jr. emphasizes, “It’s important for the audience to know that no, you came here to have a good time, to laugh, to relax. So if someone’s doing a really intense solo, someone might come up and just do Cotton Eye Joe or a silly solo, just to remind everyone. No, this is a place where you can be free and laugh and relax, not just give it to us, give it to yourself too, you know awesome.”
