ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Four firefighters were honored at the Elmira City Council meeting Monday for their actions during a house fire on Division St. in Elmira on February 2.

Fire Chief Andrew Mallow awarded Deputy Chief William Gillette, Captain John Curione and Firefighters Shane Leonberger and Joseph Heverly with the Medal of Valor. They received the award for their efforts to save the life of a person after an early-morning fire at a home near Diven Elementary.

According to Mallow's Letter of Commendation, which was released by the City, Gillette was the first responder on scene who told the arriving crew someone was inside. After first responders forced the door open, Leonberger ran inside, dragging them to the front doorway. Curione helped Leonberger remove them from the house. When outside, Heverly gave the victim medical aid until other life support arrived.

"The actions of these four individuals on this day were exemplary," the released letter reads.

The person they tried to save died 3 days after their life-saving efforts.

Chief Mallow said while the outcome was not favorable, the firefighters still deserved recognition.
