NEWFIELD, N.Y. (WENY) -- A Newfield man was sentenced for sexually abusing a child.

On Tuesday, 74-year-old Stephan R. Starks was handed down a sentence of 10 years in prison.

According to the Tompkins County DA's Office, Starks was convicted of course of sexual conduct against a child after entering a guilty plea in January. The DA's office said Stark admitted to sexually abusing a child under the age of 13 over the course of several years.

District Attorney Matthew Van Houten said, “There is nothing that the Court system can provide to heal the trauma suffered by the victim in this case, but it is my hope that this represents a step toward closure for the victim and her family.  This resolution should serve as a strong message that this kind of abuse has no place in our community.”

Starks was also sentenced to 20-years of post-release supervision.
