Corning yarn shop fights food insecurity in Knit for Food Knit-a-thon
CORNING, N.Y. (WENY) -- Rabbit Row Yarns & Haberdashery in Corning is hosting a team for the Knit for Food Knit-a-thon, a 12-hour crafting event to raise money for organizations that feed the hungry. The event is taking place on Saturday, March 23rd from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Rabbit Row's owner Barbara Vassallo is taking on the challenge with her fellow Corning knitters and crafters for a third year in a row. This year, she will be hosting a meet-up/potluck from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the shop's new location, at 24 E. Market Street in the Gaffer District.
This year, Vassallo's goal is to raise $2,000. The money goes towards Feeding America, World Central Kitchen, No Kid Hungry, and Meals on Wheels. Vassallo said, over the course of her life, her parents always reminded their family of how fortunate they were to always know where their next meal was coming from. Now, she wants to help others feel taken care of and well-fed.
"In later years, my mom became a recipient of Meals on Wheels and it was a way for her to stay independent in her home until she died at 93," she said. "So, it's another way to honor their legacy."
