Squirrel creates high voltage arc at substation, causing Elmira power outage
UPDATE, 2:00 p.m.: According to NYSEG, all customers in Chemung County have had their power restored.
UPDATE: NYSEG customers who lost power in Elmira this morning are starting to get text messages that power has been restored.
UPDATE: Along with residences, some Chemung County Office buildings have been impacted. As a result, the County Attorney’s Office, the Public Defenders’ Office, the Public Advocates’ Office, Treasurer’s Office and the Project for BailSome are all closed for the day.
ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- NYSEG crews are on the scene of a substation in Downtown Elmira after a squirrel came into contact with wires and created a high voltage arc on the morning of Friday, March 15th, knocking out power for some Elmira residents. The arc happened shortly after 10 a.m., and according to many witnesses, it resembled an explosion.
According to officials with the Elmira Fire Department, no word yet on the extent of the damage, or when power will be restored. The Director of the Chemung County Library District said the arc happened just outside their office, and described it as a massive strobe light.
