Spontaneous Combustion Causes Early Morning House Fire in Horseheads

UPDATE FROM 9:20 A.M. -- Firefighters responded to a house fire around 6:30 a.m. on Bowers Drive in Horseheads. Horseheads Fire Chief Art Sullivan said the Chemung County Investigation Team determined the cause of the fire is from oil and paint rags that were left in a pail and spontaneously combusted.
According to Chief Sullivan, he said once his team arrived on scene, the house was fully engulfed.
Chief Sullivan said one person was home and got out safely. He said the person had two dogs, but one dog is still missing at the time of this publication.
The Horseheads Fire Department was assisted by Town & Country Fire Department, the Elmira Heights Fire Department and the Millport Fire Department.
HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WENY) -- A fire early Sunday morning damaged a home on Bowers Dr. in Horseheads.
The fire ignited sometime before 7 a.m. inside the residential area.
A WENY reporter on scene says the inside of the house looked completely blackened. Most of the damage from the blaze appears to be concentrated in the back part of the building.
The cause of the fire is still unknown as of the time of publication.
