WELLSBORO, PA (WENY) -- The U.S. Renal Care in Wellsboro is closing within 10 days and one patient said she's still trying to figure out where she's going to receive care. Anita Hoyt is a dialysis patient at the U.S. Renal Care and said she's most likely going to go to Elmira for treatment, but the problem is she doesn't know how she's going to get there.

"People are being displaced and no one knows where they're going, when they do find out they're not happy about it. Most likely I'll be going to Elmira but it's going to depend on the bus situation. We're in a rural area where there [aren't]...taxis [or] Ubers, and yet these buses are trying to make some way to be able to take us [but they haven't told us they can yet.] I've gotta hope that on Tuesday (2/20) I have a bus," said Hoyt.

Some of the patients who go to the U.S. Renal Care in Wellsboro use BeST Transit. It's a transportation program that takes people to places in Bradford, Sullivan, and Tioga Counties. The Executive Director for BeST Transit said they've been working on a plan to get patients to treatment centers that might not be on its regular routes or during regular hours.

"We are committed to making our services available to those patients who need this life-saving care. We are going to have [drivers] come in as early as 2 a.m. and be working until possibly 10 or 10:30 p.m. We're working with the patients [who] would be going mostly to the Williamsport area and I believe we're working on possibly getting some of those patients to the Elmira/Horseheads area, as well as the Towanda area," said Executive Director for BeST Transit, Mark Hamilton.

A statement from U.S. Renal Care on January 24th said:

"U.S. Renal Care had to make the very difficult decision to close our Wellsboro center. Providing care in communities like Wellsboro is a challenge many healthcare providers face as Medicare reimbursement has not kept up with the rising costs of operating a dialysis center. As a result, Wellsboro, like other centers across the country, have struggled to cover costs and unfortunately, this sometimes results in a center closing. U.S. Renal Care is taking every measure to ensure our patients have access to the lifesaving care they need. We are working closely with each of our patients and their physicians to help them identify another dialysis center without experiencing any interruptions to their treatment schedule."

Since the statement was released, patients have been relocated to other facilities like Williamsport, Corning, and Elmira. Hoyt said she's overheard people say how they don't know how they can do the long drives all the time.

"[They say] they don't know if they'll be able to do these drives all the time and maybe they should just quit dialysis. But, quitting dialysis means they don't [get] to live [anymore]. I'm hoping they don't [quit]. I'm hoping they stick to it and remember, six months seems like a long time away, but if they can get this thing going, we can be back as a family and [be] right back in Wellsboro," said Hoyt.

A central Pennsylvania-based organization, Independent Dialysis Group, is looking to build a treatment center somewhere in Wellsboro, however, the location hasn't been decided yet. One of the owners of Independent Dialysis Group told WENY News he hopes to open a facility within the next three to six months.

State Representative for the 68th District Clint Owlett said he and Tioga County officials are working together and will help with what they can.

"Not often do you see county, state, and federal officials working together seamlessly, pulling in the same direction [which is] exactly what’s happening here. We all see the need, we know the need, and we're going to do everything we can to make sure that we get a dialysis center in the north-central region of the state as soon as possible," said Owlett.
