The first ever "Ghost in the Museum" event happening at the Chemung Co. Historical Society
ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- On Saturday, February 3rd the first ever "Ghost in the Museum" tour and event will tell the stories of Elmira's history through four ghosts. The sister event to the "Ghost in the Museum" is the "Ghost Walk" at Woodlawn Cemetery, annually around Halloween.
"We are doing our brand new program, "Ghost in the Museum," it's an opportunity for folks to come here and hear some new ghost stories," said Bruce Whitmarsh, Director of the Chemung Co. Historical Society.
Parts of the museum that are not normally open to the public will be accessible during Saturday's 50-minute tours.
"It is going to include stories about our organization, as well as our 100th anniversary. We were founded in 1923, so we are going to tell stories about 1923. Elmira in 1923. Some of the people who helped to start the organization and kind of just celebrate ourselves a little bit," says Whitmarsh.
The first character WENY News met was a woman portraying a librarian and researcher.
"I am telling all about the life of Dr. Arthur B, who contributed a lot to Elmira and the historical society," says actress and ghost Maggie Hall. She added "He was a busy man. I think one of the significant things I learned was that he was not only a medical doctor, but he did a lot in the community."
The next character WENY met was Fannie Brooks. She was the Mother of an Ivy League university student.
"Fannie Brooks was the mother of the first African-American graduate at Cornell University," says actress and ghost Holly Strickland. "He went on to study law there and practice law here in Elmira."
Laura Voorhees is plating a maid, whose ears ring when the gossip starts and she gets to share those stories and more.
"I play a maid and as maids go they hear and see a lot of things and so I get to tell about the rising of David B. Hill who went on to become the 29th governor of New York," says Vorhes.
While the February 3rd event is sold out, the Chemung County Historical Society offers a variety of events all year long and those can be found here. The historical society hopes to turn the "Ghost in the Museum" tour into an annual event.
