U.S. Renal Care & Potential Buyer for Wellsboro Location Can't Reach a Deal
WELLSBORO, PA (WENY) -- The clock is still ticking as dialysis patients in Tioga County, Pennsylvania are still trying to find care at other treatment centers after U.S. Renal Care announced it would be closing its Wellsboro location. At one point, Independent Dialysis Group found out U.S. Renal Care was closing the Wellsboro location and was interested in buying it.
But now, that's not happening.
"We immediately contacted U. S. Renal Care to find out how we could help. Those discussions led us to pursue options that would keep the Wellsboro center open. On January 17th, we were notified that U.S.R.C. was no longer interested in a solution that would not disrupt patient care and that they were still planning to close the center on February 24th," said one of the owners of Independent Dialysis Group, Adrian Amedia.
Independent Dialysis Group runs several treatment centers in Pennsylvania, with the closest one in Williamsport. Amedia said they weren't told why U.S. Renal Care didn't move forward with their proposal. Amedia said his company is now working on a solution for kidney care patients in Tioga County.
"We've been working on developing a new center in Wellsboro and we intend to open in [three to six months in] 2024. Our constraints are finding a space, getting it ready, making sure we have three-phase power, [and] making sure it has adequate water and sewer connections. We remain committed to re-establishing an outpatient dialysis option in Wellsboro," said Amedia.
It's unclear as of January 31st where the new center will be located in Wellsboro. While the news of a center opening in Wellsboro may give patients hope, they still have to find other treatment facilities 45 minutes to an hour or more away.
"In the long run...granted we're gonna die anyway from kidney failure. But, we shouldn't have to die sooner because we can't get the proper treatment or it's too much on us because we have to travel long distances and go everywhere. I'm going to keep fighting and I'm not going to stop," said dialysis patient, Anita Hoyt in an interview with WENY News on January 25th.
In a statement to WENY News from January 24th, a representative for U.S. Renal Care said:
"U.S. Renal Care had to make the very difficult decision to close our Wellsboro center. Providing care in communities like Wellsboro is a challenge many healthcare providers face as Medicare reimbursement has not kept up with the rising costs of operating a dialysis center. As a result, Wellsboro, like other centers across the country, have struggled to cover costs and unfortunately, this sometimes results in a center closing. U.S. Renal Care is taking every measure to ensure our patients have access to the lifesaving care they need. We are working closely with each of our patients and their physicians to help them identify another dialysis center without experiencing any interruptions to their treatment schedule."
WENY News has contacted U.S. Renal Care by phone and email multiple times for comment regarding the offer from Independent Dialysis Group. As of about 8 p.m., on January 31st, they haven't gotten back to us.
