ALBANY, NY (WENY) -- New York Governor Kathy Hochul (D) gave her annual State of the State Address on Tuesday afternoon, talking about her legislative agenda for 2024. The State of the State Address included 204 proposals for this legislative year, including things like the mental health crisis, working towards a sustainable future, and public safety.

Gov. Hochul said if the government can't keep its citizens safe, then nothing else matters.

"Last year, we reduced gun violence [which brought] shootings down by a third all across the state. Murders are down 21% in New York City [and] down 38% upstate," said Gov. Hochul.

Gov. Hochul said the success in decreasing gun violence proves targeted strategies work. In her speech, she mentioned gun laws and how those in domestic violence situations must be protected. She added, she's dedicating $20 million to prosecute abusers and take away their guns.

"First, we must ensure everyone is safe at home by protecting them from domestic violence. New Yorkers are much more likely to be hurt by someone they know. In one third of assaults, the attacker and the victim have a prior relationship. Our system fails too many survivors. In New York City alone, 84-percent of domestic violence arrests end with dismissals. But now, the Supreme Court [could] overturn a law that keeps guns away from the abuser. We need to strengthen protections and it's more urgent now than ever before. Last year, too many abusers had access to guns so we changed the law," said Gov. Hochul.

Gov. Hochul also said she wants to combat the sales of unlicensed cannabis, which creates a public health and safety concern. She added, "We'll empower localities to go after the unlicensed shops [and] prosecute businesses that sell to minors and padlock their doors faster,"

After reviewing Gov. Hochul's State of the State Address, some state lawmakers are wondering why she left out current key issues. In a statement from State Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay, he said there are some glaring issues Hochul neglected to address.

In the statement, Barclay said "Improving maternal and infant health, expanding recreational opportunities, offering greater protections to consumers and getting better performance out of New York's public schools are all measures on which we agree. But, what we didn't hear today is what should alarm New Yorkers. With a $4 billion budget gap, there was no commitment to keep state spending in check. Illegal migrants are crossing the southern border in droves, but New York has yet to figure out how to properly handle the ongoing influx. Despite New York owning the nation's worst outmigration numbers, there is no concrete plan to ease financial pressures on families and businesses. After years of pro-criminal policies that undermine public safety, there is still no interest in increasing the accountability of fixing glaring problem's in the state's criminal justice system."

U.S. Rep. Marc Molinaro (NY-19) also released a statement reacting to the governor's state of the state address. In the statement, he mentions how "there's over 100,000 undocumented immigrants in New York City and the City is still attempting to bus more migrants to communities in Upstate New York. This is a crisis [and] it's baffling Governor Hochul wouldn't even mention it in her State of the State Address or her 180-page 2024 agenda."
