HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WENY) -- The public got a chance to voice their opinions about the possibility of a business growing cannabis in the Village of Horseheads on Monday night.

Upstate Craft Cannabis has applied for a permit for a proposed indoor greenhouse plant nursery to grow cannabis.  The permit is for 3312 South Main Street. The business would operate with a license from the New York State Office of Cannabis Management, and sell cannabis to licensed retail dispensaries.   There were mixed reviews on the topic.

"My biggest concern would be, you might be bringing criminals in here to do smash and grab. They know its a marijuana growing place. Whats going to stop them from smashing in, taking the stuff, and leaving?" said one man.

"My only concern is, you gotta call it a greenhouse, what is the legal medical opinion on having marijuana there for growth?" said another man.

"Why the board would even consider this kind of activity is beyond me," said a third man.

The couple who owns Upstate Craft Cannabis is being represented by Matthew Buzzetti.  He said he wanted to clear up some concerns.

"They're looking at a small operation with no retail sales there, they will then take that product to a wholesale distributer, nothing will be held on site.  People wouldn't be coming in and out of the building , and it would be a small grow operation," said Buzzetti.

Buzzetti also wanted to clarify that Upstate Craft Cannabis has no connection to the business already at 3312 south Main Street, or the big fight that recently happened there.

The village board says there was an issue with the permit in the planning board stages, and it needs to be re-evaluated. They decided to push the vote to the next meeting.
