Elmira Fire Department receives $276,000 grant to buy new equipment
ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Elmira Fire Department announced Monday afternoon that they received a $276,545 grant after being selected from a national pool of applicants. The money comes from FEMA, aiming to help emergency responders to obtain critical resources to help protect themselves and the community.
"This is part of FEMA's Assistance to Firefighters Grant program to provide funding and resources necessary to protect our emergency personnel from fire and other job hazards," said Representative Nick Langworthy.
The Elmira Fire Department has 56 firefighters, and they answer a lot of calls throughout the year. The money is going to go towards 40 new Scott air packs, and 80 air bottles to go with them. Air packs are a crucial part of fighting fires.
"The safety of our first responders is paramount. This grant is a significant step forward in enhancing the capabilities of our local fire department. It's a testament to the dedication and to the hardwork of our firefighters, who are now better equipped to protect the lives and property of Elmira residents," added Representative Langworthy.
EFD Chief Andrew Mallow says the news tanks have technology that makes it easy to find firefighters who are low on air and replace their tanks, the face pieces can withstand higher temperatures, and the packs are generally easier to use.
"Its kind of a confidence booster for us. Our other air packs were starting to wear down, when that's your lifeline, you want to be confident in your breathing air. That helps us," said Chief Mallow.
Firefighters say this new air packs could last up to 15 years, and will be an asset to community firefighters on the job.
