WAVERLY, N.Y. (WENY) - The Waverly football team has a big opportunity this weekend. The Wolverines will head to the dome in Syracuse to compete in their first state championship.

Waverly will face top-ranked Fonda-Fultonville in the Class C title game on Saturday at 6 pm. Both teams have just one loss this season.

Waverly has cruised through the Class C bracket with a 49-8 win over Adirondack in Regionals then a 42-0 victory over Salamanca in the State Semifinals. Fonda-Fultonville shut out Gouverneur, 22-0 in Regionals then followed it with a 33-7 win over O'Neill in the Semifinals.

Head Coach, Jason Miller says it's been business as usual for the team as they prepare for the Braves who are also playing for their first-ever state title.

"We've got to make big plays, we've got to stop their big plays and we've got to tackle better than we did last week," said Head Coach Jason Miller. "In the early part of that game, we didn't tackle so well, we picked it up. A lot of fundamentals, there's a lot of things at this time of year that don't change."

"We know they like to throw the ball and they're fast and athletic and they got some big guys in the middle so we just got to play like we always do and come out hard," said senior quarterback Joey Tomasso.

"Just focus, prepare, watch film, don't let how big they are or how fast they are get in your head and just think about what's ahead of us" added senior offensive and defensive lineman, Jacob Benjamin.

The team is also hoping to bring a state title home for their community.

"This community is probably one of the most supportive communities of the football program and probably the entirety of the state," Miller said. "We've been working at this a long time and nothing would make me more proud than being able to say that we're state champions. A lot of people rally behind us every week but this week is a big week and we're going to have a great experience at the dome."
