CORNING, N.Y. (WENY)-- The holiday lights on Market Street in Corning will look a little different this year.  The lights, that  typically span the length of the street, will be limited this year to the intersections.

''This change in lighting the tree at the intersections and crosswalks, is a way to continue the lights which we all love so much, but do it in a more physically responsible way just for this year,'' explained by Coleen Fabrizi - the Executive Director of Corning's Gaffer District.

Coleen further explained that the expense of the lights comes from the Corning Intown District Management Association, funded by tax levy paid by downtown building owners. Additionally, the cost of the tree lights has gone up, while the funds from Corning Intown District Management Association have decreased.

Due to a trimming process, lights on all trees are scheduled to be out by January 2024.  For this reason, Coleen said that it would be financially irresponsible to invest an additional $16,000 in relighting the trees for only December.

''The decision was not an easy one to make and was not made by one person, '' said Coleen Fabrizi.

There has also been the issue with the GFI lights tripping when they get wet, causing the lights to go out. Consequently, someone has to manually flip that GFI.

''Even though we had to reduce the number of lights on Market Street this year, we are enhancing the lighting features on Centerway Square and Riverfront Park. We are thrilled to be one of the Downtown featured on the Hallmark Channel like we were last year. '' said Coleen.

Coleen wishes that everyone would come out and support the local business, despite the tree lighting situation.
