Penn Yan Police: Mass shooting hoax under investigation

PENN YAN, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Penn Yan Police Department said it's working with the FBI to try and find out who reported a hoax active shooter situation at a hotel over the weekend.
According to the department's Facebook page, the call came in around 6:30 Saturday night. The caller, who was noted to have a thick foreign accent, called the police department's non-emergency number to report a shooting at the Hampton Inn Hotel. The caller said at least 25 people were shot on the first floor.
A nearby officer was on scene immediately after the call was made, and was able to determine the whole thing was a false report. As a precaution, police said they did a room-by-room search and interviewed everyone there.
Police said the hoax caller appears to have called from a different country. Penn Yan Police said the FBI is now working to find out exactly where.
